Gay is stepping down on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 2, after just six months and two days since being appointed president of the university, according to the Harvard Crimson. Her tenure is the shortest ever for a Harvard president, the newspaper reported.
Her resignation comes after mounting allegations of plagiarism of her doctoral dissertation and her response on antisemitism on college campuses during a congressional hearing on Dec. 5.
The announcement also comes just weeks after the Harvard Corporation, which oversees the university, and hundreds of faculty voiced their support for Gay.
Dr. Alan Garber, Harvard’s provost, will become interim president, the Boston Globe reported.
